How
The Project Benefits Students
Due to the broad scope of the project, students from just about every
major can be involved. Currently, students majoring in such fields
as Aeronautical, Electrical, and Agricultural Engineering, Computer
Science, Manufacturing, and Business are lending their skills to this
project. In doing so, they are gaining new skills they otherwise might
not have had an opportunity to obtain.
For students, the CubeSAT Project is an ideal way to bridge the gap
between classroom models and real world application. It also provides
an opportunity to enhance the students' skills in critical thinking
and problem solving and to further their research abilities. Additionally,
by bringing together students from different disciplines to work toward
a common goal, they have the opportunity to discover the critical importance
of teamwork and cooperation.
How
the CubeSAT Project is organized.
In order to utilize each member's abilities to the fullest, four working
groups have been formed: Electronics/Programming, Math/Physics, Manufacturing,
and Public Relations.
The Electronics/Programming group has the responsibility for the main
working components. The team has recently finished programming a microprocessor
that will collect data on temperature and relay the information using
DTMF (like your touch tone telephone.)
The Math/Physics group researches conditions the vessel will likely
encounter and determine the necessary requirements. This team is also
responsible for the power budget, making sure the satellite's energy
requirements do not exceed the available onboard solar energy supply.
The Manufacturing group will design and construct the actual satellite.
It is their responsibility to see that it meets all design specifications.
It is vital these all be met in order to ensure that all the satellites
being built elsewhere will successfully deploy--all participating institutions
must meet the same requirements set by a group at Cal Poly University.
The last group is Public Relations. It is their job to oversee the
administration and fund raising for the project--not a trivial matter.
Without their work the project could not move forward.
